More about our probiotic bacteria supplements We are suppliers of high strength probiotics / bowel-friendly bacteria. Probiotics are food supplements and are widely believed to be useful for digestive system problems and inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs), including diarrhoea, Crohn’s disease, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and ulcerative colitis. They are particularly useful if the levels of your “good” and “bad” bacteria in the bowel are out of balance (e.g. dysbiosis), which can occur for example: 1. after use of antibiotics, if thrush or other infections develop as a side-effect 2. following an illness 3. if experiencing excessive stress 4. as we get older, given that our ability to produce digestive enzymes decreases as we age and foods are therefore poorly digested 5. following travel to a foreign (and particularly developing) country 6. if you experience regular tummy upsets or a tight tummy 7. if you have an urgent need to use the toilet, such as persistent diarrhoea and excessive bloating. It is thought that an imbalance of bowel flora can lead to may unpleasant symptoms, such as a bloated stomach, irregular bowel movements, loose stool or constipation, bad breath and compromised immune system. Probiotic supplements are recommended by health professionals, such as naturopaths, colon hydrotherapists and nutritionists, for people who wish to ensure or maintain a good amount of the friendly bacteria in the digestive system. If possible, it is suggested to use dairy-free bacterium for a healthy bowel. By far the most well-known species of probiotic bacteria is Lactobacillus acidophilus, which has led many people to refer to probiotics simply as "acidophilus". However, there are actually a number of types and strains of probiotics. Candida albicans Candida is a simple yeast that lives in all of us; it is present in all our mucus membranes, for instance. Most of the time, this yeast co-exists in our bodies quite harmoniously. However, on occasion and for reasons such as those mentioned above, overgrowth (candidiasis) of the yeast can occur, leading to certain unpleasant symptoms and health issues. Candidiasis is caused by the yeast-like fungus candida albicans. It may lead to thrush in the mouth, throat or in the vagina, as well as other parts of the body. While this yeast overgrowth is neither systemic nor life threatening, it is a nuisance and the problem is exacerbated by the fact that hardly any medicines are effective (particularly long-term) against fungal infections, and all of them have side effects. Probiotic bacteria can help to ensure that the balance of micro- organisms in our systems is maintained and that the candida does us no harm - especially if combined with beneficial digestive enzymes. Choosing the right digestive enzyme supplement can be difficult. Enzymes are very delicate and, if not well-manufactured, can easily lose their potency. Commercial enzyme supplements are often neutralized by varying pH levels of stomach acids. A digestive enzyme supplement should be broad-spectrum, so that it can better facilitate the digestion of protein, fats, carbohydrates, fibre and milk lactose. The use of acid-protected enzyme formulas can enhance efficacy. Why we need “good” bacteria It is widely accepted that “good” or “friendly” bacteria support our immune function. For instance, we need such bacteria to support any immune system response to infection. Similarly, good bacteria is helpful in the breakdown and metabolism of foodstuffs. For example, the body produces acetaldehyde when it breaks down yeasts (such as in alcohol) - this is a poison. Probiotic bacteria may have a beneficial regulatory effect on acetaldehyde levels, by metabolism of the same. When our bodies are functioning at an optimal level, and digestion of foods is working correctly, or when we give our bodies what they need in terms of food supplements, dormant toxins are transformed into a source of energy. For instance, candida converts sugars into ethanol, which has antiseptic properties. Candida actually supports what is known as the Krebs energy cycle, which necessary for the health and maintenance of all cells. However, when our bodies are not functioning effectively, and there is an imbalance of bowel flora, toxins remains within our system, food is only partially digested, our nutrient absorption and production suffers and disorders may develop as a result. Antibiotic use is considered to be one of the major causes of imbalance of bowel flora. The problem with antibiotics is that they do not only target the bad bacteria in our body. They are unable to make the distinction and therefore target friendly bacteria too.
